“la Caixa” and Repsol are extending contactless payment systems to new sectors. Repsol has installed PIN pads with this new technology in 140 service stations across Barcelona and the Balearic Islands, where “la Caixa” has already issued contactless cards to its customers.
Repsol is the first IBEX35 company to offer customers the possibility of paying with contactless technology. “la Caixa” has now issued over 950,000 contactless cards and has 19,000 PIN pads in operation which are adapted to the new technology across Barcelona and the Balearic Islands.
The contactless payment system is of particular interest to busy establishments, such as the Repsol service station network, which welcomes over one million customers every day. In Spain, Repsol markets a wide range of products across its 3,600 service stations and with over 40% of the market share, it is the country’s leading firm in this area.
With the launch of the contactless system in Barcelona, “la Caixa” could be considered one of the most progressive financial entities in Europe, in terms of developing new payment systems. So far, the bank informs us, no other European financial institution has committed to installing contactless systems across the board. “la Caixa” is also quick to point out that they were the first Spanish financial entity to commercially launch this new technology
Payments for any amount can be made, but to speed up the process even further, “la Caixa” customers do not have to enter their PIN for purchases under 20 euros. “la Caixa” told us that security of payment is taken very seriously and are quick to point out that the system includes all the advantages of EMV technology (the current chip), as well as the CaixaProtect guarantee, with which “la Caixa” protects its customers from the potential fraudulent use of any of its electronic payment methods (cards, Internet or mobile banking).
