Visa and Karstadt launch contactless payments

From October this year, one of Germany’s leading retail chains, Karstadt GmbH, will introduce contactless and mobile payment with Visa in all their Karstadt stores, meaning that 3,400 contactless terminals will be in use. The conversion of the terminals began in June and will be completed by the end of September, allowing customers to pay with their Visa contactless card or an NFC-enabled smartphone in the 119 Karstadt department stores throughout Germany. This applies also for future contactless payments with V PAY. The limit for spending will be set at 25 € before requiring a PIN number.

“We are pleased to see how mobile payment generates more and more enthusiasm in Europe. With the acceptance of contactless payments using Visa at Karstadt we are taking an important step to expand this service in Germany: in future, customers can pay quickly and conveniently with their Visa contactless credit card and the V PAY debit card. This creates a pleasant shopping experience – for retailers and customers, “said Ottmar Bloc Hing, CEO of Visa Europe in Germany.

In Europe so far, 62 million contactless Visa cards have been issued. In Germany, seven banks have issued around 800,000 contactless Visa cards to their customers: BW Bank, comdirect, DKB, Landesbank Berlin TARGOBANK, Volkswagen Bank and Postbank. Until the end of 2013 approximately two million contactless cards in the German market will be issued. The payment instructions are exchanged based on the EMV standard securely between a Visa contactless chip card and a card terminal with contactless function. This technology can be used for payment cards and mobile payments with smartphones. Visa cardholders may pay up to an amount of 25 € without identification number (PIN) or signature. If the amount is above 25 €, the customers can legitimize the purchase with their signatures or PIN.
