Oberthur Technologies, STM partner in Canadian public transport

Oberthur Technologies, one of the world’s largest providers of security and identification solutions and services based on smart card technologies, is to renew its six-year partnership with STM, the transport authority of Montreal in Canada, for four years. Furthermore, last month, both companies celebrated the 5,000,000th card distributed in the city.

STM (La Société de Transport de Montréal) and other operators in the Montreal area and in the Quebec region, transport more than 900,000 travellers every day, by metro, tram, buses and ferries using the OPUS card. “We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Oberthur Technologies which is our OPUS card provider since the beginning of e-ticketing in the City of Montreal. Oberthur Technologies is a key partner which has the capability to leapfrog the OPUS Card future evolutions, especially regarding card dematerialisation on mobile” said Pierre Bourbonnière, Marketing Director at STM.

Oberthur Technologies provides STM and its partners its CityGo card, a multi-service dual interface card for ticketing and city applications, fully compliant with the Calypso™ international standard. The cards are made of PET-F, a highly durable plastic, essential for transport cards which are expected to last 7 years after issuance. Oberthur Technologies’ contactless card provides the end-users with a more convenient and secure transportation experience.

“STM is the first transport operator to provide an interoperable card, allowing commuters to use the OPUS card throughout the Quebec province. We are proud to have been able to contribute to this major success story, and we look forward to accompanying STM into a new era of transport cards, enhancing commuters’ travel experience through new devices such as NFC-enabled mobile handsets” said Eric Duforest, Managing Director of the Payment Business Unit at Oberthur Technologies.
