Is Android Pay to launch in the UK this month?

Android PayA variety of sources are indicating that the much touted Android Pay will launch in the United Kingdom at the end of March. If it does so it will find a growing market for mobile payment possibilities  – not only the likes of Apple and Samsung, but also with mobile payment solutions like Barclaycard bPay, EE Cash on Tap and V.Me.

According to the Telegraph, industry sources said Google will announce that Android Pay will be available in the UK from the end of next month. The launch in the UK will then be six months after Google introduced its contactless payment method in the US.

However, despite the time lag to market in the UK, when Android pay does hit the contactless payment market, it has the benefit that it will be available to a heap of smartphone owners, with Android currently accounting for more than half of such devices sold in the UK.

Apple Pay launched in the UK on 14 July last year and Samsung Pay is due to launch in the UK soon. “The UK is seen as a battleground for mobile payments because of the high take-up of card payments and wide availability of contactless terminals”, writes the Telegraph.
